Four employees of the SA Police Service at Mount Road Police Station in Port Elizabeth suffered fractured legs when the lift they were in plunged four floors to the ground on Wednesday.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Marinda Mills, said that there were seven people inside the lift, six female and one male employee, when the accident happened at around 4pm.
“Four sustained fractured legs while the others were treated for various injuries. All injured persons were stabilised by emergency services on the scene,” she said.
Mills said that the Department of Public Works has been informed about the incident.
Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga, said she was shocked at what happened and conveyed her best wishes to the injured SAPS employees.
General Ntshinga said “a thorough investigation will be held into the incident”.
