The Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements has allocated R10-million to register and transfer title deeds to home owners
Human Settlements Director of Communications, Lwandile Sicwetsha said a total of 10,000 title deeds will be transferred to correct beneficiaries.
Sicwetsha said the province still had as backlog of an estimated 70,000 title deeds to register and transfer.
Human Settlements MEC, Helen Sauls-August, was expected to handover 161 title deeds to home owners in Lady Frere this week.
Sicwetsha said it was part of a national drive to issue title deeds to home owners who received houses after 1994.
"This is a drive to reduce the backlog that is currently sitting at 70,000 in the province. The department has also appointed 26 conveyancers as from November last year to fast track the issue of title deeds in the province" he said.
According to a statement from the department, each conveyancer had been given a batch of 800 units to transfer.
Siswetsha added that the department had reduced the backlog in many municipalities, which included Buffalo City Municipality, Nelson Mandela Bay and the Kouga Municipality.
The Department registered 8,249 title deeds during the present financial year
