Four killed on the notorius R61

Four people have been killed in an accident on the notorious R61 in the Eastern Cape.

The R61 links the Eastern Cape with the Western Cape and was identified at the launch of the 2019 Festive Season Arrive Alive Campaign yesterday as one of the most dangerous roads in the country.

Eastern Cape Provincial Traffic Deputy Director Charles Bramwell says the head-on collision happened at 1 am on Friday morning on the R61 some 80 kilometres from Aberdeen and involved a Toyota Quantum and a Toyota Etios.

He says all four occupants of the Etios died on the scene and the driver of the Quantum and his passenger were only sightly injured.

Bramwell says fatigue is suspected to have played a part in the cause of the accident.

A case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
