Four people including a mother and her 8-year-old child have been killed in a shack fire in Malabar, Extension six, Port Elizabeth.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alvin Labans says a neighbour heard cries for help and police and emergency services were called to the scene at about 6:30 on Tuesday morning.

Labans says 33-year-old Luchnene Crotz was killed in the blaze along with her eight-year-old son Dwayne.

Two teenage girls were also burnt to death in the fire.

Warrant Officer Labans identified the girls as 17-year-old Leigh-Anne Lesly and 13-year-old Keesha Dolf, who was the sister of the 33-year-old Crotz.

The shack was completely guttered by the blaze.

At this stage, it is unclear what caused the fire.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
