Police in East London are investigating a case of culpable homicide after four people were killed in a three-vehicle pile-up on Monday night.
The accident happened on the N6 road in East London near the Abbotsford Christian Centre.
Officials say a Toyota Avanza with five occupants and an articulated truck with a single driver collided head-on at about 6 pm.
A third car, a Mercedez Benz rammed into the back of the Avanza moments after the accident.
Four of the five passengers in the Avanza, who were all men, died on the scene.
The fifth passenger, a woman, sustained severe injuries.
The truck driver escaped unharmed while the driver of the Mercedez was treated for injuries.
A spokesperson for Provincial traffic Unathi Binqose says eyewitnesses told them that the Avanza drove straight into the truck.
A case of reckless and negligent driving, as well as four cases of culpable homicide, is under investigation.
