George police have taken four people in for questioning in connection with the murder of an elderly Pacaltsdorp woman.
A neighbour found the semi-naked body of 70-year-old Audrey Fivas in her Clinic Street home on Monday morning and alerted police.
Police said in a later statement that Fivas' mouth was covered with a piece of cloth and she also had visible injuries to her head and neck.
"Police forensic experts continued their search for evidence and clues on the scene this morning (Tuesday)," said SAPS spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie.
He said police guarded the crime scene throughout the night.
Pojie said the four, three men and a woman between the ages 17 and 39, have not been formally charged yet but are currently detained at Pacaltsdorp police holding cells.
"An autopsy will be performed on the deceased tomorrow (Wednesday, 08 June 2016) to determine the possible cause of death. The possibility that she might have been raped is also being investigated," he added.
"The Eden Cluster Commander Maj Genl Oswald Reddy and the Pacaltsdorp SAPS management commended those members involved in the speedy arrests and wish them well with their continued investigation that may lead to the successful prosecution and conviction of those involved in the murder. He also had praise for the contribution of the community on whose information we sometimes rely to make such break-throughs."
"We furthermore appeal to anybody with information about this Murder to contact the investigating officer, Sgt Vicky Gibson at Pacaltsdorp detectives at 044 8039100/9130," Pojie said.
