Fort Hare student denied bail in murder case

Murder victim 20-year-old Mbasa Hlalukana

A Nursing student from University of Fort Hare accused of killing his girlfriend was denied bail in the Mdantsane Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old Anele Tsewu has been in custody since his arrest in February.

The body of Mbasa Hlalukana was found in Tsewu's home in Unit 8 in Mdantsane, just two days after the 20th birthday.

She was allegedly beaten by Tsewu and succumbed to head injuries.

The courtroom was packed with Hlalukana supporters who eagerly awaited the Judgment on bail

Tsewu's defence attorney Asanda Pakade argued that his client had no previous convictions or pending cases against him and that he also had a fixed address, and should, therefore, be granted bail.

Magistrate Nolundi Mkwali did not agree and said there was a possibility that Tsewu could interfere with witnesses as his stepfather was one of them.

She also highlighted the fact that Tsewu's life could be in danger as the community was outraged by the incident.

The case was postponed to the 25th of March for further investigation.
