Fort Hare closed amid ongoing protests

Fort Hare University has suspended its academic programme at its three campuses amid ongoing student protests.

The institution said in a notice on Thursday that "ongoing intimidation and violence against staff" prompted the closure of the campuses.

The students were reportedly demanding the departure of vice-chancellor, Sakhela Buhlungu.

Fort Hare spokesperson, Khotso Moabi said they have experienced looting and damage to property despite a court interdict.

"We have requested students to leave their residences and return home," he said.

He said they have lost two weeks of the academic programme due to the protests and he said they will be losing another week at least now that the campuses have been closed.

The protests have also led Buffalo City Municipality to appeal to residents in areas with high student populations in Southernwood, Quigney and in the East London CBD not to put out their refuse until further notice.

Municipality spokesperson, Samnkelo Ngwenya, said that protesting students were using the rubbish to trash the streets.

He said Buffalo City was appealing to the management and students of both Fort Hare and Walter Sisulu Universities to resolve their issues without inconveniencing residents.
