Four Pakistani nationals have been arrested by Eastern Cape police for a fraud scam that spanned two provinces.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said the men were arrested on Wednesday by members of Cradock's Commercial and Forensic Task Teams.
He said the foreign nationals allegedly recruited unemployed people in Beaufort West in the Western Cape, promising them jobs in Graaff Reinet.
Kinana said once in the Eastern Cape the "recruits" were then taken to the local municipality to get confirmation of their addresses, supplied with three months of falsified pay sheets and ordered to open credit card accounts.
He said the money was then withdrawn by the syndicate and that "55 credit cards to the value of R1.7m were already issued".
The four suspects, aged between 24 and 44 will appear in the Middelburg Magistrates Court soon on charges of fraud.
Kinana said more arrests were imminent.
