Gauteng police are searching for the gunmen who shot and killed the former head of the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development Stanley Khanyile.
The Municipal Manager of the Sedibeng District Municipality was reportedly shot six times in a parking lot in Alberton on Saturday.
According to the public broadcaster, police said the attackers fled in a Toyota Cressida.
Khanyile was the former head of the Department of Social Development in the Eastern Cape.
He was due to appear in court on 16 October on charges of money laundering, fraud, and theft related to a multi-million rand project in the Eastern Cape.
Sedibeng District Executive Mayor, Busisiwe Modisakeng, described his murder as "brutal and inhumane".
She said the circumstances surrounding his murder are under investigation.
