Former PE SARS employee in court for fraud

A former SARS employee, 52-year-old Petrus Meyer has made yet another brief appearance in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court.

The Despatch resident is accused of defrauding the SA Revenue Service of more than R6 million between June 2007 and June 2012.

His co-accused, businessman Arthur Webb, has been jailed for 15 years after pleading guilty to charges of fraud and corruption.

In aggravation of sentence earlier in March, State Prosecutor Tjaart Van Zyl argued that after an auditor visited  Webb, he tried to cover up his tracks by falsifying evidence.

Van Zyl outlined that he also spent some of the money on purchasing a Mercedes Benz, a bakkie, flying lessons and a honeymoon trip.

Van Zyl said the case involving over R6 million in fraud was the biggest the SA revenue service had seen in the Eastern Cape.

He argued that Webb was prepared to smooth over a corrupt relationship in order to get money into his own pocket.

The state called for direct imprisonment for at least 15 years.

Meanwhile, Defence Advocate, Charl Van Rooyen argued that Webb did not embark on the offences based on greed.

Van Rooyen said that Meyer was in fact the instigator or mastermind behind the crime and that the fraud happened because of his direct involvement .

The defence asked the court to impose a sentence of 12 years correctional supervision.

Meyer's case was postponed to the 29th of June when he is expected to plead to the charges against him.
