A Former Warrant Officer from SAPS appeared in the New Law Courts in Port Elizabeth this week for allegedly defrauding the South African Police Service.
The 49-year-old Jimmy Desmond Marais, who was stationed at Mount Road SAPS is accused of submitting several false travelling claims in August 2017 to an amount of about R18 000.
Marais was stationed at the Vehicle Identification Safeguarding Section (VISS) in Port Elizabeth.
A spokesperson for the Hawks Captain Anelisa Ngcakani says it is further alleged that during this period Marais travelled to the Ezingolweni Magistrates Court in KZN where he was supposed to be in court for a week.
She says, instead of being in court, Marais allegedly went shopping in Pietermaritzburg.
He then submitted his travel receipts and also claimed for the clothing he bought on his shopping spree.
Captain Ngcakani says the station discovered a discrepancy when the receipts for the clothing showed a date where he was supposed to be in court.
As a result of a thorough investigation, Marais was served with a summons to present himself at court.
He was released on warning and the case was postponed to the 24th of March.
