Former Nelson Mandela Bay Communications Director, Roland Williams, appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday.
The National Prosecuting Authority said he was arrested at his home for allegedly “breaching the terms and conditions of his 2018 sentence for fraud.”
NPA spokesperson, Anelisa Ngckani, said he was granted bail of R1000 and the matter remanded to Tuesday for him to file an application for “legal aid”.
Williams was sentenced in 2018 to 36 months of correctional supervision, a suspended four-year prison sentence, and was fined R30 000 for defrauding Santam.
He was also ordered to back the R96 000 that had been paid out to him.
“Santam submitted an affidavit to the state reporting that the last payment he made to them was on October 2019 and that he owed them R 40 000,” Ngcakani said.
In January 2018, Williams pleaded guilty to insurance fraud after he falsely claimed more than R115 000 in insurance for an accident that never happened.
