Former Home Affairs official jailed for fraud

A former Home Affairs official has been jailed 7 years for fraud and contravening sections of the Births and Deaths Registration Act.

The state says Marthalini Hanabeshe had used her position to create birth and death registration details of fictitious family members and then took out life insurance in their names.

In an elaborate scheme over several years she had been able to defraud several insurance companies out of tens of thousands of rands.

Meanwhile the Eastern Cape High Court has handed down two life sentences to a man who raped two children in Mdantsane, near East London.

Thirty one old Thanduxolo Magoswana was sentenced for the rape of a seven-year-old girl in 2009 and an eight-year-old boy in 2010.
