Former George policeman sentenced in diamond dealing case

A former George policeman has been sentenced in the Mossel Bay Regional Court for being in possession of and selling uncut diamonds.

The 37-year old Brendan Esterhuizen and an accomplice tried to sell the diamonds of 16 carats to police members during an undercover operation in Hartenbos in December 2009.

Although Esterhuizen pleaded not guilty on the charges against him, he was found guilty.

During mitigation the defence argued that the accused was at a vulnerable state in his life and that he was not the instigator of the crime. The accused was sentenced to two year’s imprisonment , suspended for five years.
