Former Falcons rugby player in court for murder

A former rugby player has made his first appearance in court on Friday in connection with the murder of the 52-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Charl Kinnear who was shot and killed in front of his house in Bishop Lavis earlier this month.

The 39-year-old Zane Killian appeared briefly in the local Magistrates' Court where he was charged for murder, conspiracy to commit murder and the unlawful interception of communication.

Killian played for the Valke (Falcons) on Gauteng's East Rand between 2005 and 2013 and also had a season with the Griquas during this time.

Killian is expected to apply for bail, which will be opposed by the State.

The case was postponed to the 5th of October.

Police say more arrests cannot be ruled out.

Spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi says Kinnear had just arrived home last week Friday when the suspect approached his car and opened fire on him at close range.

The details and motive around the murder are still unknown.

Lieutenant Colonel Charl Kinnear was investigating several high profile murders in Cape Town.

Zane Killian's mother was murdered on a farm outside Still Bay in 2018.

The 63-year-old Heila Killian was braaing with her sister when five armed suspects in overalls opened fire on them.

Killian was shot through the heart and died on the scene whilst her family members were tied up and beaten during an ordeal that lasted for up to two hours.
