Former EC Speaker convicted of fraud

The former Speaker of the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality has been convicted in over two hundred counts of fraud by the Aliwal North Magistrates Court this week.

The 46-year-old Kholekile Lange was arrested in February of 2017 by the Serious Corruption Crime Investigation Unit of the Hawks.

Lange submitted fraudulent travel claims to the very municipality he worked for, in a period stretching over 5 years.

The then Speaker pretended to be on official duties when in fact he was not.

Investigations further revealed that in some instances Lange used particulars of a vehicle that did not even belong to him.

A spokesperson for the Hawks Captain Anelisa Ngcakani says the municipality paid him a total of R97 000.

Lange was investigated and subsequently arrested after the Hawks received information from a whistleblower in March 2016.

He will be sentenced on the 22nd of October.

His bail was extended.
