Former EC Premier appointed as the province's new Director-General

Eastern Cape Premier, Lubalo Mabuyane, has announced the appointment of Mbulelo Sogoni as the province's new director-general.

He is no stranger to the provincial administration, having led the province in 2008 as Premier when he took over from Nosimo Balindlela. He was succeeded by Noxolo Kiviet a year later.

Speaking to the media during a virtual briefing on Tuesday afternoon, Sogoni acknowledged that he rejoins the provincial administration during a difficult time as it battles the covid19 pandemic.

"This time is not an easy one for everybody. We all hope that soonest we will go back to normal in terms of our efforts to drive performance in our system and drive accountability," he said.

He also thanked Premier Mabuyane for the confidence shown in him, even though he is back on familiar territory.

Premier Mabuyane said appointing Sogoni to this position of responsibility was important to the Provincial Government's efforts to build the Eastern Cape "we want."

"The main focus of the provincial government is to grow our economy to create decent jobs, business opportunities for the people of our province so that we can eradicate unemployment, poverty and inequality," Mabuyane said.

He said Sogoni "is a well-rounded, strategic, skilled and talented leader who is now given a responsibility to manage the administrative arm of the provincial government."

"His result-driven management and leadership approach makes him a suitable person to lead the administration of the Eastern Cape provincial government," the Premier said.

The Premier also appointed Sibongile Mpofu as the HOD for the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture
and Mzilindile Mafani as HOD for the Department of Transport.
