A former Kei Mouth policeman appeared in court in Komga in the Eastern Cape on Monday for the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl who was a complainant in a separate matter.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said the case against the 45-year-old ex-Detective was postponed to next Monday for a formal bail application.

IPID's Lizzy Suping said he was arrested on Friday after the incident in his office at Kei Mouth Police Station on 6 August.

It is alleged that the 17-year-old victim was a complainant in a case that she opened against her boyfriend.

Suping says the former policeman fetched the teenager from her home to take her to the police station to make statement and that he started making sexual advances towards her, which she rejected.

At the police station the suspect took the victim to an office where he allegedly raped her.

"Afterwards the victim was able to run to the Community Services Centre to lodge a complaint," Suping said.

She said the suspect had since resigned from SAPS.

Newly appointed Eastern Cape Community Safety MEC, Xolile Nqata, was in court on Monday.

"The challenge is now on the criminal justice system to deliver justice for the victim, not just in the case involving the police officer, but in the assault case she was at the station to report in the first place. And to do the same in all GBV cases in particular," he said.
