A member of the Kamesh local community watch was gunned down by cable thieves on Tuesday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says 37-year-old Bernard Christoffels, a former police Constable, was with fellow community members patrolling Kamesh when they spotted three suspects burning cables inside an empty house in Moffat Street.
He says when patrollers confiscated the cable the suspects ran away, however, one turned around and fired several shots that fatally wounded Christoffels who died on the scene.
Kamesh police are now investigating a case of murder.
Captain Beetge says when officers arrived on the scene they followed up on information and arrested two suspects shortly after.
He says they also confiscated a 9 mm pistol with five rounds of ammunition.
The suspects are being detained on the weapons charge but more charges could be added if the gun can be linked to the murder.
The suspects aged 19 and 28 will appear in the Magistrates Court in Kariega on Friday.
