An Eastern Cape Prosecutor accused of raping a 23-year-old university student has been granted bail in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court.
Thirty-seven-year-old Manzolwandle Nkubungu based in Komani was released on R3500 on Tuesday.
NPA spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, says he will be joined by his co-accused, Ntuthuzelo Tsotso, who is also out on bail, during their next court appearance in November.
He says the university student was allegedly sexually assaulted while sleeping at the prosecutor's home after a night out last year.
Tyali says Tsotso was arrested soon after the matter was reported and further investigations linked Nkubungu to the incident which led to his arrest on Monday.
"The NPA views this case, which falls in the realm of gender-based violence, in a very serious light and has commenced internal labour relations processes against the Komani-based prosecutor," he added.
Tyali added that the enrollment of the case against their own was a clear indication that if there was enough evidence against anyone then the NPA would prosecute without fear or prejudice.
