Former Bank employee from Knysna arrested after nearly a decade for allegedly stealing Kruger Rands

A wanted suspect who has been on the run for almost a decade was arrested in Wilderness near George, early on Thursday morning.

Spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says the 54-year-old has been on the run since 2012 in connection with the theft of Kruger Rands with an estimated value of R7.8 million.

He says Knysna detectives were assisted by the Tsitsikamma K9 unit at 10 am where they pounced on a residence in Wilderness.

Police followed up on the case when an arrest warrant was issued against the accused.

The Kruger Rands were allegedly stolen between May 2011 and 9 March 2012 when the owner presented them to the suspect for safekeeping.

At the time, the suspect was working at a Bank in Knysna and offered to safeguard the Kruger Rands.

Captain Pojie says when the owner asked for her commodity back, the suspect refused and when the Kruger Rands disappeared she laid a criminal complaint against him.

The suspect will appear in court on Friday.
