Former Adelaide municipal official sentenced to seven years behind bars

A former municipal official from Adelaide has been sentenced to seven years direct imprisonment in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court.

Mzwamadoda Jac, a former pay roll officer at the Nxuba Municipality, was sentenced on Monday on charges of money laundering and theft involving more than three-hundred thousand rand.

According to the charge sheet, during July 2011 and June 2012 , Jack either by himself or through an agent had created fictitious creditors on the Municipality's electronic accounting system.

He then included particulars of these fictitious creditors in the payment batch list and made payments to them, pretending that these were being made to a law firm and legally due to them.

However, the state said that Jack then requested the law firm to withdraw the money and deposit it into his bank account.
