Formal inquiry following PE building collapse

Eyethu Fishing says its conducting a formal inquiry into the first floor collapse of one of its facilities in the PE harbour, in which 86 people were injured, two of them seriously.

The wooden floor crashed onto scores of shift workers in the canteen below on Thursday evening.

Company chairman Stephen Dondolo says the two seriously injured staffers remain hospitalised while a further 15 workers were admitted for treatment and observation.

He said the affected areas would be closed until repairs were completed.

On Friday Labour Department inspectors closed a second Eyethu Fishing building at the harbour as a precaution because of its similar design to the one that collapsed.

The Labour Department's chief provincial inspector, Livingstone Matiwane, promised a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.
