Foreign shop owners evacuated from Booysens Park in PE

Port Elizabeth police are evacuating foreign shop owners in the Booysens Park area whose businesses were looted on Tuesday morning.

Residents marched on the Betheldsdorp police station demanding increased policing, went on the rampage, looting and setting fire to foreign owned spaza shops.

Police spokesperson, captain Stanley Jarvis, says so far 11 people have been arrested on charges of public violence.

He said police also used rubber bullets to disperse the protestors who had set up burning barricades in streets in the Booysens Park area in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Jarvis also confirmed that three people have been arrested in connection with the mob murder of two people in the Booysens Park on the 19th of this month.

They were arrested on Tuesday and were due to appear in court.

According to earlier reports the mob killings are linked to community outrage over the growing gang violence in the area.

Six houses of suspected gangsters were also reportedly torched.
