Flamingo's are dying in the Sedgefield area

SanParks are investigating the death of flamingos in the Sedgefield area.

A flock of birds were first noticed by residents in Langvlei two weeks ago, however, residents have since found dead flamingos on the banks of the vlei.

SanParks spokesperson, Nandi Mgwadlamba, told Algoa FM News the carcasses have been sent for testing.

Samples were tested for avian flu, Newcastle disease and avian botulism. All tests came back negative.

Scientists suspect natural causes could have triggered the outbreak, such as low water levels coupled with warm weather.

Lead aquatic scientist Ian Russell says birds are dying in Rondevlei, Langvlei and Eilandvlei only. No dead birds were collected in Swartvlei.

Mwagdlamba says further tests will be conducted and that rangers continue to collect dead birds in the area.
