A five-year-old girl has died in a fire that engulfed a house in Kwanobuhle in Kariega.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre' Beetge, says the tragedy unfolded at around 6.45 PM at the house in Tsaka Street on Thursday evening.
The little girl was identified as Inothando Phana.
"A carer for the girl alleged that she was busy making food in the kitchen when she saw the lounge on fire and managed to flee to safety. Unfortunately, the five-year-old girl was playing in the lounge area at the time and could not be saved," Beetge said.
He said firefighters could not determine the cause of the blaze, but he said no foul is suspected at this time.
An inquest docket has been opened by Kwanobuhle SAPS for further investigation.
