Five people were killed and nine others were injured in a head-on collision at Mqanduli in the Eastern Cape yesterday.
The provincial Transport Department says a Toyota Quantum with 16 occupants, from Mqanduli, collided with an articulated truck with two occupants.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says four people were declared dead at the scene while the fifth person died on arrival at a hospital.
He says the injured were taken to Madwaleni Hospital and the Nelson Mandela Provincial Hospital for further medical treatment.
Binqose says the two occupants in the truck escaped unharmed.
He says it is alleged that reckless and negligent driving were the main contributing factors.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
