Five in court for Fort Hare attacks

File

Five people are due to appear in court in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday on charges of murder and attempted murder related to incidents of violence at Fort Hare University.

Police Minister Bheki Cele and Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, are expected to attend the court appearance of the five in the Dikeni Magistrate's Court.

National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, announced the arrests in a statement on Monday.

She said the suspects face charges of murder and the attempted murder of employees attached to the University of Fort Hare.

One of the victims was Mboneli Vesele, the bodyguard and driver of vice-chancellor, Sakhele Buhlungu, who was shot and killed in January.

Fleet manager, Petrus Roets, was killed in a suspected hit last March.

Fort Hare also announced last month that a former employee was arrested with illegal firearms in a sting operation.
