Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says “dangerously high breath alcohol levels” were recorded among some of the 57 people arrested for drunk driving so far this Easter weekend.
According to MMC for Safety and Security, Lawrence Troon, officials measured breath alcohol levels of more than 1 mg/l for several drivers.
“Considering that the legal limit is a breath alcohol level of 0.24 mg/l or less, it is hard to believe that these individuals could even walk, let alone operate a vehicle on a public road,” he said.
“Dangerously high breath alcohol levels of 1.35 mg/l, 1.26 mg/l, 1.14 mg/l, and 0.96 mg/l were recorded. The lowest reading was 0.37mg/l,” Troon said in a statement on Sunday.
He said in spite of a decrease in road fatalities thus far this Easter, two people were killed in hit-and-run accidents on the City’s freeways on Friday and Saturday.
Troon said of the 57 drunk drivers arrested, 22 were arrested by Traffic Law Enforcement and 35 by Metro Police.
