Five in court for assault on ADM councillor

Five people appeared in an East London Magistrates Court on Tuesday in connection with the assault of ADM councillor, Nanziwe Rulashe.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said they were arrested on Monday evening after a video of the shocking incident went viral.

He told Algoa FM News that the five were given bail of R500 each and ordered to return to court on Tuesday.

The allegation is that the five unlawfully and intentionally assaulted Rulashe, forcefully removing her from her office.

In the scuffle, she was also hit with clenched fists and dragged on the floor.

A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in the Eastern Cape Anelisa Ncgakani identified the suspects as 43-year-old Zolani Davis, 39-year-old Phelele Piti, 38-year-old Sibusiso Mnisi 30-year-old Siyamthanda Matskiziza and 23-year-old Sonsezo Mbotyi.

In one of the videos, Phelele Piti told the person recording that she was the head of Security who received a verbal instruction to remove Councillor Rulashe from the building.

The incident has been condemned by COGTA, SALGA, and the Women's Caucus in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature.

The Amathole District Municipality distanced themselves from the incident that took place at their head office in East London.

The suspects will be back in court on the 11th of March.
