Five arrested in Plettenberg Bay protests

Five men made a brief appearance in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of public violence.

They were arrested following four days of protests at the town this week.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 49, will remain in custody until next week when they are expected to apply for bail.

The N2 in the area had to be closed several times since Monday.

It is believed that residents are unhappy about housing issues.

Meanwhile, Western Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Tertius Simmers, visited the area on Friday and said that the community would soon benefit from the Qolweni Phase 3 housing project worth R33 million.

However, construction of the houses should have started in January.

Simmers said processes would be put in place to get the project back on track.
