The shutdown of Makhanda has been called off in the wake of the Municipality obtaining a court interdict.

The spokesperson for the Unemployed People's Movement, Ayanda Kota, says they respect the court order.

He says, however, that they will be opposing the court interdict when the matter is expected to be heard next week, possibly on Friday.

Residents took to the streets this week calling on Premier Oscar Mabuyane to step up and dissolve the Council.

Cooperative Governance MEC, Fikile Nqatha, and two cabinet colleagues were in Makhanda earlier this week to find a lasting solution.

He said in a statement issued on Friday that moves are afoot to address these issues through short and long-term plans.

The service delivery crisis had also led to a landmark High Court ruling that the Makana Council should be dissolved.

The matter is still on appeal.

Protesters met and decided to call off the shutdown of the city on Friday afternoon after Makana municipality secured an urgent interim interdict against them early on Friday morning.

The interdict is against the Unemployed Peoples Movement and its spokesperson, Ayanda Kota, who was named as a respondent in his personal capacity.

A total of six parties, including the Minister of Police and the Makhanda Station Commander, were also cited in the judgement.
