Members of a police task team arrested five suspects for a taxi-related murder in Lusikisiki last week in which 50-year-old Gcinithemba Ndila was killed.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, said police also seized two firearms and an automatic rifle during the operations carried out this week.
He said the first breakthrough into Ndila’s murder was made on Thursday when the first suspect was arrested and the weapons recovered.
Nkoholi said the suspect was charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition while the investigation is also looking at possible links to other taxi-related shootings.
“Ndila's cell phone was also recovered,” he said.
Meanwhile, the four other suspects, aged between 25 and 32, were subsequently arrested by the task team.
Nkholi said the five will appear in the Lusikisiki magistrate’s court on Monday on charges of murder, while the one faces the additional charge related to the Firearms Control Act.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene welcomed the arrests, saying that police were “closing in on the syndicates” believed to be behind taxi violence.
