A 30-year-old man from Pretoria who was visiting family in Port Elizabeth has drowned.
Police Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the man was fishing with his brother at Maitlands at about 10.30 am on Friday when he was caught by a rip current and swept away.
She says the brother managed to swim ashore.
A passerby on the beach noticed that the one man was in trouble and went into the sea and pulled him out of the water.
Janse van Rensburg says they immediately applied CPR but he passed away on the scene.
The brother, who survived the incident, was taken to hospital for a checkup.
An inquest docket was opened at the Kabega Park police station.
