Fisherman pulled overboard

Volunteers at the National Sea Rescue Institute at St Francis Bay were activated on Monday night, following a request for urgent medical assistance from a Cape Town crayfish trawler.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says the vessel reported that a 30 year old Cape Town crewman aboard suffered severe injuries, after his foot was reportedly caught in a rope, while deploying crayfish traps.

He says the fisherman was pulled overboard by the rope and then pulled underwater by the descending crayfish trap some 25 nautical miles off-shore of St Francis Bay.

Lambinon says crew members were able to cut one of the lines, and then used it to haul him back up to the sea surface.

He says the man had sustained a serious fracture to his leg, and was later admitted with near drowning symptoms to hospital in a serious condition.
