A fisherman from Oyster Bay, who it is suspected had gone overboard overnight from the Chokka fishing vessel, Sea Cat, off the Tsitsikamma coast in the Eastern Cape remains missing after an extensive search on Friday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
In a statement, the NSRI said crew only noticed the man was missing on Friday morning and raised the alarm by contacting Telkom Maritime Radio Services.
“Our NSRI St Francis Bay sea rescue craft Spirit of St Francis II was launched immediately and NSRI Plettenberg Bay, NSRI Port Elizabeth, and NSRI Oyster Bay were placed on alert and NSRI notified the SA Air Force in case aerial support could be launched,” the statement said.
“On arrival on the scene our sea rescue craft conducted an extensive search that was assisted by the private aircraft but no sign of the missing fisherman has been found.”
The NSRI said the police had been alerted. The Institute added that the missing fisher’s father and brothers are aboard the Sea Cat.
“Police will continue in an ongoing search operation and the Police Dive Unit has been notified and Police have opened an investigation.”
