Volkswagen Group South Africa has announced a change at the helm, with Robert Cisek departing and Martina Biene, becoming the first female Chairperson and Managing Director of VWSA.

The company said in a statement on Thursday that Cisek would return to Germany to take up a post under former VWSA boss, Thomas Schaefer, the CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand.

Biene returns to VWSA for a second spell, following her two-year stint as the Head of Volkswagen Passenger Brand, between 2018 and 2020.

She is currently the Head of Volkswagen Small and Compact Product Line and will assume her new position "once all the necessary regulatory approvals have been attended to."

Schaefer said Biene's mandate is to sustain VWSA's strong position in South Africa and to continue to pursue the company's plans to grow the brand in Sub-Saharan African markets.

He also thanked Cisek "for steering VWSA to a stable position during a highly challenging period for the local and global automotive industry."

Cisek will take up a new role as Head of Volkswagen Small and Compact Product Line in Wolfsburg, reporting to Schaefer.
