Police have identified one of the victims of a horror accident at the weekend in which Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Nqaba Bhanga was also injured.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg has named the deceased as 44-year-old Nonzwakazi Maho.

The identity of the second person, a man, is still unknown.

The accident happened on the R75 on the corner of St Leonards Drive and Uitenhage Road at 11.30 pm on Saturday.

NMB Mayor Bhanga was driving in his navy blue Mercedez Benz which collided with a grey Audi with two occupants – both of whom were killed.

The circumstances around the accident are still being investigated and a case of culpable homicide is under investigation.

Meanwhile, Mayor Bhanga is in a stable condition in hospital following surgery on Sunday to treat internal bleeding.

Social media was buzzing over the weekend with criticism due to both Bhanga and the victims being out on the roads during the national curfew with starts at 10 pm.

Bhanga who is also the DA’s provincial leader and mayoral candidate for the upcoming local government elections celebrated his 44th birthday on Saturday.
