Firefighters back in action battling fires

Fire fighters were fighting a run-away fire in the Garden Route National Park on Friday with more than 3 000 hectares of the park being burnt.

SanParks spokesperson, Nandi Mgwadlamba said the fire started on private land on Monday and jumped into the National Park in the vicinity of the Kraggs at Plettenberg Bay.

Two Oryx helicopters from the SA National Defense Force had been launched to assist the firefighting teams.

Mgwadlamba says more Working on Fire teams are expected to arrive today to try and help contain the blaze.

She added that with winds gusting at  50km per hour there is no indication as to when the wildfire will be contained.

Meanwhile, the Port Elizabeth Fire Department said fire-fighters are again attending to bush fires in four areas across the metro.

The fires were in Seaview Lion Park, at Framesby, Rocklands and alongside the Old Grahamstown Road.

According to the department there's no threat to people's homes.

The South African Weather Service has indicated that there would be a 30 per cent chance of rain showers in Port Elizabeth on Friday which would be good news for the fire fighting teams.
