Fire department working around the clock to extinguish fires

Buffalo City Municipality says the fires burning at the Roundhill Regional Landfill Site in Berlin should be extinguished by Wednesday.

The fires started on Sunday and is believed to have originated from the grass between the nearby informal settlement largely occupied by people involved in recycling.

Buffalo City spokesperson, Keith Ngesi, says the fire department has been working round the clock to extinguish the fire which had blanketed the N-2 between East London and King Williams.

Ngesi told Algoa FM News that they have a plan to prevent fires at landfill sites.

"We will be appointing a service provider to look at the broader challenges around the site, including the eviction of the informal settlers in the site. This poses a security risk and it does affect compliance" he said
