FBI assists local police in American couple's kidnap drama

Mpumalanga Police have welcomed the arrest of a 36-year-old suspect who was allegedly behind the kidnapping of an American couple who were on their way to the Kruger National Park.

Provincial Spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli says the incident happened last week Thursday on the R536 in the Calcutta area.

He says the 47-year-old man and his 39-year-old wife were held at gunpoint by two armed men in a VW Golf with a blue light.

Mdhluli says the couple was forced to drive to a different location where they were robbed of all their belongings and left stranded.

He says the victims were later assisted to reach the Masoyi Police station where a case was opened.

Mdhluli says a multi-disciplinary task team, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), assisted in the successful apprehension of the suspect.

He says the FBI assisted with valuable information through their technology which assisted in tracing some of the stolen items.

The intel led them to a house at Kanyamazane where the suspect was arrested and found in possession of an HP iPhone laptop, two iPads, an iPhone smartwatch, a laptop, two sets of binoculars, a signal jammer and a blue light.

SAPS says due to the nature of the investigation, that is ongoing, the name of the suspect cannot be released.

He will remain in custody until his next appearance on the 19th of September.
