Maintenance worker takes own life at complex in Gqeberha

Gqeberha police have opened up an inquest docket after a 31-year-old man took his own life in St Georges Park.

Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the victim was doing maintenance work at a block of flats in Park Drive on Wednesday when he hanged himself.

She says the man, wearing an orange overall, jumped from the roof of the building with a rope attached around his neck.

His fellow employees alerted the police.

Colonel Naidu says his next of kin must still be informed.

On Sunday, the South African Government commemorated World Suicide Prevention Day to promote global commitment and action to prevent suicides.

According to a report from the South African Federation of Mental Health, 77% of suicides occur in lower- and middle-income countries like South Africa, where it is estimated that every day, 23 people lose their lives to suicide – the third-highest suicide rate out of all African countries.

Globally, on average about 3 000 people take their own lives per day while 20 or more will attempt it.
