A 15-year-old Grade 7 learner from the Mpekweni Primary School in Peddie is in police custody after he stabbed a fellow learner to death.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci said the incident happened at about 9 am on Thursday morning at the school's athletics day.
According to reports the suspect had a knife at school and was showing the 16-year-old victim how to make use of the weapon. He stabbed him in the chest in what the Department of Education described as a "mistake".
Spokesperson for the Department Mali Mtima says the 16-year-old teenager was immediately taken to a nearby clinic but was declared dead on arrival.
Colonel Soci says the matter is still under investigation.
Soci said the 15-year-old learner was arrested and was being processed in terms of the Child Justice Act.
The Department of Education first provided the incorrect ages for the victim and suspect but the correct ages were determined once police arrived on the scene and were amended as such.
