Port Elizabeth police are investigating two cases of culpable homicide following fatal accidents at the weekend.

Spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu says a woman, believed to be in her 40's, was killed in an accident during the early hours of Sunday morning in Beach Road, Summerstrand.

She says it is alleged that the woman was crossing the street when she was hit by a BMW.

Naidu says the vehicle was travelling from Summerstrand in the direction of Kings Beach.

The 42-year old driver is being detained on charges of drunken driving and culpable homicide.

Col Naidu says in another accident, a 5-year-old boy was killed and his 35-year old mother critically injured, after they were hit by a Quantum minibus taxi in Standford Road, Gelvandale on Saturday afternoon.

She says according to police information, the mother was carrying the child across the road when the accident happened.
