"Fake" lawyer back in PE court on Monday

An Eastern Cape woman who pretended to be a lawyer and who regularly provided legal analysis to news organisations, is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court on Monday for the beginning of trial.

Brenda Wardle is accused of pretending to be a lawyer and offering “services” to a convicted murderer.

The State alleges that during April 2009 and August 2013, Wardle was paid nearly R540,000 to assist jailed Stephanus van Aardt, who was requesting early release on parole.

The so-called legal analyst and author was arrested in East London earlier in June after evading court for more than a year.

It is unclear whether or not Wardle, who is conducting her own defence, will be ready to proceed with the trial
