Failed cash in transit heist in Alice

Eastern Cape police are on the trail of at least four suspected robbers following a failed cash-in-transit heist in Alice on Tuesday morning.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Khaya Tonjeni, says two G4 security guards were busy delivering a cash box to Capitec Bank at around 9.30am.

He says one security guard was inside the vehicle while the other exited to take the cash box inside the bank when the men pounced.

Tonjeni says while some of the men accosted the security guard the other accomplices grabbed the cash box and made a dash for their get-away car.

"There was an attempted robbery at Alice today at 9.30am when two security guards were attacked by four heavily armed men. This happened when G4 security guards were busy off-loading money boxes from their cash-in-transit vehicle outside Capitec Bank."

"One security officer was inside the cash-in-transit vehicle while one was carrying the cash box into the bank. The four armed men intercepted the security guard while the others took the money box and left for their get away car. Shots were fired and the four suspects escaped in a Golf and bakkie they hijacked in the parking area."

"Police arrived at that moment and pursued the suspects. The vehicle they used to escape was found abandoned in a township outside Alice."

"One security guard sustained head injuries. At this stage no one has been arrested. A case of robbery and car hijacking was opened at Alice police ."

"As they were leaving with the money it (the money box) exploded" tainting the money.
