Two security guards were injured following a cash-in-transit heist on the N2 near Mdantsane.

At 8 pm on Tuesday, officials from the Department of Transport in the Eastern Cape alerted motorists of an active crime scene with all roleplayers on scene.

The stretch of road between Berlin and Qonce (formerly King Williams Town) was closed for over an hour and traffic had to be diverted.

A spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says police were called to the scene at 6 pm where they found the security guards injured.

He says it is believed that explosives were used during the robbery that resulted in the injuries.

WO Nkohli says the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown and the Hawks have now taken over the investigation.

He says the officers were rushed to a nearby hospital.

An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.
