Members of the Cookhouse Highway Patrol have made another abalone bust along the N10 near Cookhouse which resulted in a suspect running into the trailer of a passing truck to escape from police.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the suspect, whose identity is not yet known, died on the scene.
She says members were patrolling the N10 when they noticed two vehicles travelling together, when they attempted to stop them, the driver of an Audi Q5 started speeding but eventually stopped just outside Cookhouse where he jumped out of the vehicle, running to his death.
Colonel Naidu says two suspects aged 31 and 37 were arrested with 4785 units of abalone with an estimated street value of R3.8 million confiscated.
This bust followed less than 48 hours after a similar arrest near Kanonjoli (formerly Somerset-East) on Friday.
Colonel Naidu says the Cookhouse Highway Patrol stopped a flatbed Touareg, loaded with 3 275 units of abalone with an estimated value of R3 million.
The Sarah Baartman District Commissioner Major General Xolani Xawuka commended the Cookhouse Highway Patrol for their alertness and intuition in nabbing a total of four suspects and recovering abalone with a combined street value of R6.8 million in the space of just two days.
