Eskom warns of possible loadshedding this week

Although Eskom has kept the country's lights on for five weeks, following a grueling period of load shedding during winter, the power utility cautioned on Sunday that the power system would be tight in the coming days due to maintenance work.

It said it would undertake planned maintenance on the Cahora Bassa hydro-electric scheme, which meant that South Africa would get 650 MegaWatts instead of the 1 500 MWs normally imported from Cahora Bassa on a daily basis.

Eskom said this maintenance was expected to be completed by next Sunday, with the scheme expected to be back at full power the next day.

It pointed out that the power system would be tight, particularly over the weekday evening peak periods from Tuesday until Friday.
